INTRODUCTION

In modern-day society, so many things are changing that both young people and their parents may wonder about what it takes to succeed in Bible college in the 21st century. In all essential points, the character and discipline known to Christians of all ages is still what is needed for success in today’s society.
Several members of my staff and I have worked together to create a practical handbook for students, parents, and pastors. Whether you will someday become a student at Golden State Baptist College or some other fine fundamental Baptist college, the information contained in this brief volume could be a great help to you.
I trust we will all do all we can to prepare young people for the ministry. By investing in young people, we are investing in the cause of Christ for the next generation.

Preparing to Succeed. By Dr. Mike Zachary
Many people have the idea that only a genius can succeed in Bible college. Although a certain amount of intelligence is required, being organized and disciplined is more important than being brilliant. In my own experience as a piano teacher, I can remember that some of the most intelligent and talented students I ever taught dropped out of school. At the same time, I have seen many average students succeed because they were organized and disciplined.

Preparing Spiritually. By Brad Boruf
Bible college has the potential to strengthen your spiritual life much more than you might imagine; however, many young people are not prepared to begin this process. The main purpose for Bible college is to prepare men and women to serve the Lord full-time in the ministry. We obviously expect full-time servants to have a close personal walk with the Lord, so anything you could do to strengthen your devotions will help you as you prepare for the ministry.
John 4:24 says, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” Being spiritual is not just for people in the ministry; it is for every believer. God is looking for people who will love Him, honor Him, and serve Him. We must cultivate the desire in our own hearts to fulfill God’s will in this matter. Ask yourself, “How am I doing spiritually, and what can I do to improve?”

If we want to be a success in any area of life, we must look to the example of Christ. I Peter 2:21 tells us that Jesus was an example to us, and we ought to “follow his steps.” We talk about the importance of being like Jesus; however, we often fail to act like He acted. Notice Luke 2:52. Jesus grew mentally (in wisdom), physically (in stature), spiritually (in favor with God), and socially (in favor with man). The social area is often neglected in the life of the Christian. Because of our pride, we sometimes fail to get along with people like Christ would want us to do. The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus had the ability to get along with people. He dealt with people from every walk of life. He dealt with the rich and the poor. He dealt with the educated and the ignorant. He dealt with the young and the old. He never compromised, yet He was able to get along with those around him. Did you ever stop to think that getting along with others is a Christ-like quality? It is important to see that Jesus not only had favor with man, but He also increased in favor with man. He was constantly working at this area. If the Son of God grew socially, we definitely need to grow socially.
