While traveling with one of our tour groups earlier this summer, I had the privilege to take part in a public school Bible club. It was a blessing to see 43 teenagers gathered in one classroom at a public high school that has a total enrollment of 185 students. The quartet sang and testified, and I was able to give a brief challenge from God’s Word. I must say that those young people touched my heart.
As I walked through the halls of that school and saw the faces of the students, it was abundantly obvious that there is a tremendous need for spiritual guidance in the lives of our young people today. Every public school needs someone who would be willing to be a light and a witness for Christ. Young people need to know the Gospel. They need to know that God loves them. They need to know that there is more to life than MTV and video games.
Of course, there are certain requirements that must be met in order for a club like this one to exist. The guidelines may differ a little for each school, but generally, a student must lead the club, and there must be a teacher who is willing to sponsor the meetings.
I know that there are many Bible clubs in public schools, but I would venture to guess that the number of public schools is far greater than the number of Bible clubs. Perhaps God could use you to help start a Bible club at a public school near you. There is no limit to the investment that you can make in the lives of these young people. You may find yourself making homemade goodies, attending ballgames, and even hosting activities at your home. All of this effort is worthwhile in order to establish a testimony for Christ in a public school.
