The Worth of a Smile

By Brad Boruff, NVBC Music Director

Since it is true that the Lord loves a cheerful giver, then it must also be true that He also loves a cheerful singer. As a matter of fact, we are commanded to be happy about singing praise to God. “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands” (Psalm 100:1).

For most of us, it is good that we were not commanded to make a beautiful sound, because that might be difficult or even well nigh impossible. We are simply required to make a noise. We can all do that. However, it must be a joyful noise. This means that we must actually be joyful.

Why is it important for us to smile as we sing in the choir? There are many reasons, but let’s consider these three.

  1. If you are a joyful singer, others will see the glow on your face. It will be obvious that you are obeying the command to be joyful.
  2. Everyone looks better with a smile. It is probably the best thing you can do for your appearance, and smiles are free.
  3. The joy on your face is a testimony for Christ. David wrote, “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD” (Psalm 40:3). What did he mean when he said, “many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD”? How can you see a song? You really cannot “see” a song, but you can certainly see a person’s countenance while he is singing. The countenance tells the story of what our song really means to us. The most important reason for choir members to smile is so the unsaved listener will realize that God has done a great work in the lives of those who are singing about Him. In many cases, the Lord will use the testimony of a smile to cause someone to realize his need of salvation.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone decided the Gospel must be true because of the smile on your face? Let’s allow the love of God to dwell in our hearts so that the joy of salvation can shine in our countenances as we sing for Him.
