Tips for a Financial Check-up

By Fred Slye, Business Manager

As we approach the final quarter of 2008, this is a good time to reflect over our giving for the year. Many of us set contribution goals for the work of the Lord this calendar year. Reviewing those goals against actual contributions up to this point allows us to make up any shortfalls prior to the end of the year.

As a new Christian, for example, you may have just learned the scriptural command to tithe. Now would be a good time to look at your giving in comparison to your income to determine your faithfulness in this area. Others might have made a commitment for a special offering above and beyond their normal tithe. Now is the time to make sure you have fulfilled your vows to the Lord. Now is the time to make sure you have fulfilled your vows to the Lord.

It is also wise to investigate our personal finances during this quarter to determine if additional tax deductions are needed this year. Certainly we should not base our giving to the Lord on whether or not we receive a tax deduction; however, as good stewards of our personal finances, we might want to consider taking advantage of this benefit. Check with your tax advisor to see if such giving would apply to your situation.

To avoid the December 31 “before midnight rush,” analyze your giving in advance. Don’t be the one caught saying, “I meant to give this last year…”
