Have you ever stopped to consider why so many teenagers today are unhappy? You would think that the teen years would be the most exciting time of life; however, in many cases, this is not true. Last year, the third leading cause of death amongst teens was suicide. I believe one major reason teenagers are unhappy today is because many live their lives without purpose. The definition for purpose is, “the reason for which something exists or is done.” Can I ask you today, what is your purpose for existing? God has created you for a purpose! The mere fact that you are alive and breathing today signifies that God has a purpose for your life. The mere fact that you are alive and breathing today signifies that God has a purpose for your life.
Many teens might ask, “I know God has a purpose for my life, but how do I find it?” You can become a teen who lives his life with purpose by utilizing these four simple tools.
1. Scripture
The Bible commands each of us to search the Scriptures. A young person who does not read the Bible will be a teenager who will live his life without purpose. Through Scripture, God will speak to you about His calling for your life. Can I ask you, do you read the Bible? Is there a time when you honestly and sincerely read the precious Word of God daily? How can we ever expect the Lord to give us purpose for living if we do not read His Word?
2. Sincere Prayer
When a young person begins to pray and ask the Lord to give him purpose for living, God hears and will answer. Teenager, begin today asking the Lord to show you why He placed you here and what it is that He wants to accomplish through your life.
3. Spiritual counsel
God has placed in your life spiritual authorities to help give direction and counsel in your life. Whether it be a parent, relative, pastor, youth pastor, teacher, or mentor, these advisors may have insight to your life. Never make any major decision in your life without first seeking the advice of these leaders. The Bible tells us that “in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
4. The Holy Spirit
If you are a saved teenager, the Holy Spirit of God lives inside of you. He leads, guides, and directs your life. When the Holy Spirit begins to speak to you, please listen. I can remember when the Spirit of God began to speak to my heart about being a preacher while I was in Bible college. I did not know what all that entailed, but I’m thankful today that I listened to Him when He spoke. As you walk with God, the Holy Spirit will begin to show you what your purpose for your life is going to be.
Not one person who has ever lived was created without a purpose. Jesus Christ said that His purpose was “to seek and to save that which was lost.” The question is not, “Does God have a purpose for my life?” The question is, “Am I going to find, fulfill, and finish His purpose for my life?”
