Interview with Miss Barbara Kiel
5th Grade Girls Sunday School Teacher

By Crissi Hussin, Sunday School Administration

So tell us a bit about teaching your students about soul winning.
I begin to teach them about soul winning by being a soul-winning teacher. When a visitor comes to class, I take the time to present the gospel to the visitor very directly. How I do this is with a special binder that I always use when presenting the gospel to a child. The binder is special because the verses and pictures in the binder are large enough so that an entire group of children can listen. It is my goal for the girls in my class to see a visitor get saved during our Sunday school class hour as often as possible. I want them to see how simple it is for someone’s eternity to be changed. I hope one day each young lady that has come through my Sunday school class will have the faith, knowledge, and courage to become a faithful soul winner. It is a joy to know that some of the girls in my class are already soul winners.

Why do you think it is important for girls at age 9-11 to know how to lead someone to Christ?
I believe the younger these young ladies are when they are exposed to soul winning, the better. There is a higher likelihood that being a soul winner will become a way of life for them if they see it done when they are young.

How often do you teach about soul winning?
Every week, for about five minutes during the Sunday school lesson, we talk about the importance of being a soul winner. I weave it somehow into those lessons. We are also working on memorizing the Romans Road.

Do they have opportunities to apply what they’ve learned?
Some of the girls go soul winning with their parents on a weekly or monthly basis. I hear stories about souls they or their parents have led to Christ.

HELPS FOR OTHER TEACHERS

Could you give us, please, five tips that you think might help new teachers working with this age group?

  1. Give your students time to talk in class and listen carefully to what they have to say. You will get to know your students quickly this way. The girls in my class are very social; they love to talk (maybe they even NEED to talk). Each week, we spend time fellowshipping, talking about the events in their lives, and sharing prayer requests that are on their hearts.
  2. Use visual aids (pictures) to capture the attention, eyes, and hearts of your students.
  3. Before beginning your current lesson, review the past two or three lessons and tie them into your present lesson. This way, the students see how the Bible lessons tie together from week to week.
  4. Ask questions before, during, and after the lesson to ensure they understand the information being transferred. This age group is so enjoyable to teach because the students are very teachable and eager to learn. They absorb the information you give them and have great recall for the information presented during the lesson.
  5. Smile a lot and laugh with them; this way, they know you enjoy teaching and spending time with them.
