This month we continue our study of who God is. Please understand that at best, our finite minds can only scratch the surface of understanding an infinite God.

God Is Self-Existing

God has always existed and therefore has no beginning or end. If He was created, then there must exist someone bigger and greater than God. Unlike man, God is self-existing and does not need to depend on anything or anyone else to exist.

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” (Isaiah 43:10)

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:14)

When Moses asked God at the burning bush how to respond to those in Egypt who might enquire who had sent him, God’s response was to tell them “I AM” sent you. “I AM” is the same as the Hebrew name Jehovah, and means the one who has always existed.

God Is Immutable

God is perfect and therefore cannot change. If His nature can change, then He can no longer be absolute and perfect.

“For I am the LORD, I change not.” (Malachi 3:6)

As evidence for challenging the immutability of God, some have pointed to Biblical accounts of God repenting.

“And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” (Genesis 6:6)

A closer look at these passages reveals that it is men who have changed—not God. To be immutable does not mean immobile. God can still act, think, create, and make decisions.

God Is Not Bound by Time and Space

Both time and space are the creative works of God who existed prior to these creations.

“But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?” (II Chronicles 2:6)

God Is One

God makes it clear that there is only one God.

“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6)

Even though there is only one God, there are three distinct persons of this one God—God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
