Day 5 - Iloilo Baptist Church Saturday Ministries
Saturday, October 4, 2008
As stated yesterday, we were divided into two groups for today’s activities. Group 2 will stay in Iloilo and visit some of the extension classes conducted by Iloilo Baptist Church. An extension class is similar to a Bible club where children are invited to a meeting area and taught Bible lessons. Group 1 headed for Negros Island where they will be conducting a church service in one of the churches NVBC supports then travelling somewhere else on Sunday morning to conduct another church service in another city in Negros.
Group 2
We were picked up at 9:00 a.m. and boarded our transportation to a flood relocation center. This housing complex was built to house the displaced residents of Iloilo due to Typhoon Frank, which devastated much of the city. On the way to the relocation center, our guide Uly told us that many of the homes we were passing were at one time buried in water.
Once we got to the relocation center, our group along with other workers of IBC started gathering children for the Bible study time. Some of our ladies helped lead some of the children’s songs while others in our group knocked on some of the homes to do some one-on-one soulwinning. Jonathan Escobar spoke to a group of students from the University of the Philippines who were in the area doing some humanitarian aid. He was able to lead about 10 of them to Christ. There were children saved in the Bible study as well. Our group was able to present the gospel to about 75 to 100 people who showed up with very short notice. Many of those received Christ as their Savior and scores of them committed to ride the jeepney to church the next Sunday. This is a new jeepney route and next Sunday is their first time to run the jeepney to church from this area. God allowed our group to have a part in getting this new route started.
We then headed back to the hotel to grab a bite to eat. Who is that man having ice cream with Miss Kiel?
After lunch we were transported to another part of town to take part in another extension class. There are hundreds of extension classes scattered throughout the city of Iloilo allowing IBC to reach literally thousands of children on Saturdays. They will then bring many of these children to church on Sundays on their jeepney routes. Some of these children who were reached in one of these classes are now conducting their own extension classes.
Our ladies did some Bible story-telling to the children that gathered in one house. They did a great job and had the rapt attention of the children. They also taught the children some new Bible songs.
We then quickly headed to another part of town before the sun went down to hold another Bible story-telling time. Once again children were gathered to a spot and our ladies did a great job once again telling Bible stories to these children.
The night arrived qucikly and we headed back to the hotel to get some rest before our activities the following morning.
Talk to you then…
